Making the music is one job. Understanding the industry around it is another, and nobody hands independent artists a manual for that part.
So we’re trying something new at Vampr. Industry Focus is a live session where we bring in a company from inside the music industry and ask the practical questions on your behalf. It’s our first one, and we’ll see how it goes.
First up: Serenade
On Thu 29 Oct at 4pm US West, 7pm US East and 11pm UK, that’s Fri 30 Oct at 10am AEST time, we’re sitting down with Serenade for a 30-minute session on a topic that just got a lot more relevant. How can physical products and digital fan data work together, and what does a rule change at Billboard mean for independent artists?

What Serenade does
Serenade turns physical collectibles into NFC-enabled smart products. Posters, lanyards, mini CDs, mini vinyl, mini cassettes, pin badges, clothing tags. They look and feel like merch, with a chip inside.
For a fan, it goes like this:
- They buy the item at a show, in your online store or through retail.
- It arrives, or they pick it up, as a poster or a mini vinyl rather than a piece of tech.
- They tap it with their phone. No app to download, no account needed to start.
- Their phone opens whatever you’ve chosen, like streaming links, bonus content, exclusive drops or digital collectibles.
For you, the tap is data. You see who engaged, when and how, which a sale through a big retailer never tells you. You also decide where the tap sends people, so a physical product becomes a doorway back to your streams, your socials, your mailing list or your next release.

Why Billboard’s change matters
Billboard and Luminate have added Smart Media Albums as a chart-eligible sales format in the US, effective the tracking week of 2 to 8 October 2026. It’s the first new physical format Billboard has recognised since the CD in the mid-1980s.
The basics:
- A physical collectible (a card, vinyl, cassette, box or piece of apparel) with NFC, QR, RFID or ultrasonic tech counts when it’s sold at retail.
- The retail sale is the chart unit. The tap is the digital and fan-data layer on top.
- On the Billboard 200 it counts as 0.5 of an album unit. On the Pure Album Sales chart it counts as a full album sale.
- Each album can have up to two Smart Media versions.
- It has to be sold through a Luminate-approved vendor, and Serenade is one of the first seven.
Smart formats were already chart-eligible in the UK, Australia and Germany. The US was the gap.
Does it work for artists your size?
Crystal Tides are an independent band with no major label. They reached number 1 on the download sales chart with Serenade. At the other end of the industry, Serenade has worked on a major campaign supporting an Ariana Grande release. Same product, same fan data, very different scale.
A chart position is something you can point to when you’re talking to playlist curators, press, venues and labels. We’ll cover how charts work in plain English, so you know what moves a position and why release week matters so much.
A quick look at Workshop
We’ll also show you Workshop by Vampr, where a music project lives. Audio, video, lyrics, images, stems, split sheets and notes sit in one place instead of across email, chats and drives. Collaborators can leave a comment on the waveform at the exact second it applies, and guests can listen and comment from a link without a Vampr account. Workshop is free while in beta, then included with a Vampr subscription (USD $29.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial).
